Avoid These Beginner's Mistakes with a Paint Sprayer

Paint sprayers can be incredibly useful tools for home improvement projects. However, there are several things that people often do wrong when using this type of painting equipment for the first time. Keep reading to learn what beginner's mistakes you should avoid with an airless paint sprayer.

Skipping the Set-Up Steps

For your paint sprayer to provide you with the results that you're looking for, it's important that you follow through with several preparation steps. First, ensure that the screen at the unit's intake point is clean. Then, check that the sprayer's filters in the handle and near the pump are also free of debris. Next, strain your paint to remove clumps that would otherwise clog up the filter.

Using the Wrong Tip

Not all paint sprayer tips are made equal, and the one that you choose will affect the size of the spray. When considering your options, keep in mind that the first digit of a tip's number represents half of the spray width and that the second 2 numbers refer to the diameter of the sprayer tip's hole. If the paint goes on runny or uneven, then you may need a different size tip. Also, as you work, the tip may become clogged. To clear it out, you should rotate the tip, spray a piece of cardboard to dislodge the clog, and then point the tip forward again.

Forgetting About Pressure

When you're ready to begin painting, do not make the mistake of spraying the wall immediately. Instead, test out the spray's effect on a piece of cardboard. If the pressure is set too low, then the spray pattern will appear uneven and have lines at the top and bottom. If you can't get rid of the lines no matter the pressure setting, then try using a different tip.
